Oral Health Awareness Date Announced

This year, the Ghana Dental Association will commemorate Oral Health Awareness Month on March 20 under the theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind.”

The association will use the event to highlight the vital link between mental and oral health as they commemorate the day.

For far too long, dentistry has been seen as a reactive field that prioritises treatment over prevention in Ghana and around the world.

The association claims that this view is gradually shifting as more people become aware of the substantial influence that dental health has on general well-being, including mental and cognitive health.

Poor oral health can result in low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression, making daily interactions difficult, according to a statement signed by the president of the association, Dr. (Dent) Cecilia Kakrabah Quarshie.

The statement mentioned that persistent dental pain can interfere with sleep cycles, increasing stress and having a detrimental effect on mental health, adding that studies indicate that gum disease is associated with a higher risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, underscoring the crucial oral-systemic relationship.

It said people with mental health issues are more likely to neglect their dental hygiene, which raises their risk of gum disease and cavities.

It pointed out that stress-related behaviours that harm teeth and gums, such as smoking, teeth grinding, or binge eating, can also cause a vicious cycle.

The statement recommended that the general public get regular dental examinations, scaling and polishing, and professional cleaning because good oral hygiene habits not only keep the mouth healthy but also enhance a person’s general confidence and well-being.

A nutritious diet high in vitamins and minerals also promotes strong bones and teeth and enhances brain function.

In order to avoid problems like bruxism and TMJ disorders, it is imperative that dentists emphasise preventive care and promote mindfulness practices like stress management and relaxation techniques.

Indeed, it is necessary to visit the dentist on a regular basis.
