Samuel Atta Akyea
Samuel Atta Akyea, counsel for embattled former Director-General of National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has indicated that his client will have no choice but to divulge National Security secrets if he is pushed to the wall.
According to him, it does not make sense for his client who had faithfully played his role in keeping the sanity of the country, to be pursued by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Office of the Attorney General.
He was responding to questions regarding a memo addressed to the National Security Coordinator which got leaked last week and detailed some expenditures, including monies paid to Members of Parliament as sitting allowance.
The leaked memo also details how a whopping GH¢8.3 million was spent in September 2024 to finance an opposition party in the run up to the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Again, it details how GH¢5.135 million was spent in December 2024 to purchase luxury vehicles that were handed to the Special Aide to the President-elect.
Asked whether his client will have to let out more National Security secrets to defend himself, Mr. Atta Akyea said, “He has no choice, because why should a man be found guilty when he is innocent, when he is dealing with National Security matters?”
“So, when a man is faithfully helping National Security to help the sanity of the nation, why should he go through what he is going through? I thought National Security will look into these matters and probably have a good conversation with EOCO and the Attorney General that you are threading on slippery slope, and that is where we are,” he told reporters.
Mr. Atta Akyea also hinted that the trial of Mr. Adu-Boahene is setting a very dangerous precedent, as nobody will be willing to serve the National Security if a regime change will result in them being hauled before court to explain expenses.
“Nobody will be ready to serve National Security if in serving the National Security and there is a regime change, they will bring you to court to come and explain how National Security monies were spent, who’s going to work for National Security? So, the immunity they have is of no consequence now, and these are some of the ramifications we should take into account,” he said.
Mr. Akyea further told reporters that it was unfortunate that the letter addressed to the National Security Coordinator got leaked, indicating that his client was not trying to say he was afraid to defend himself by writing that letter.
“He was trying to let him know that where he is, National Security matters are being risked and he should come to terms with it. That was what he was trying to do. He was not saying that he was afraid to defend himself, but he is saying that they are pushing him in area of national security, and when pushed he will defend himself,” he stated.
“The letter was not supposed to come to the public domain. He wrote to the successor National Security Coordinator to look into the matters which, unfortunately, the Attorney General and EOCO are pushing,” Mr. Atta Akyea added.
