Cybercriminals Leveraging AI Technologies, Stay Vigilant – MTN CEO

Stephen Blewett

CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has stated that cybercriminals are increasingly using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to launch sophisticated attacks, making it crucial for individuals and organisations to stay vigilant.

Speaking at the MTN Cybersecurity chat held yesterday, Mr. Blewett emphasised that AI-powered phishing attacks are becoming more convincing and targeted, making it harder to distinguish between legitimate and malicious emails.

He added that this AI-powered social engineering tactics can trick victims into divulging sensitive information or performing certain actions.

“For example, AI is a positive development, but like any technology, it can be used for both positive and negative purposes. We see how cybercriminals are using AI, and that’s why companies and organisations need to stay vigilant.

If you don’t keep pace with new technologies, you’re exposed to risks. That’s the danger of not being cyber-aware,” he said.

To stay vigilant, Mr. Blewett urged internet users to keep up-to-date with the latest cyber threats and AI-powered attacks, and leverage on AI-driven security solutions to detect and respond to threats.

“The challenge we all face is that technology is changing quickly, and it’s easy to put off learning about it. You might think, “I’ll get to understand that tomorrow,” but that’s exactly what cybercriminals are counting on.

My warning is don’t wait until tomorrow. Understand what’s happening today, because if you don’t, you’re exposing yourself – and your company – to risks,” he said.

Senior Manager at Cybersecurity Authority, Gerald Awadzie, emphasised the importance of collaboration and awareness creation in the fight against cyber threats.

He stated that the authority is focusing on building a resilient foundation, national capacity development and bringing industry stakeholders together to build a culture of service in the African region.

“The authority is working with various organisations to raise awareness about cybersecurity and the importance of complying with security measures,” he mentioned.

Mr. Awadzie urged individuals to take cybersecurity seriously, noting that many people don’t understand why security measures are necessary, but they’re crucial for protecting themselves.
