3 Dead In Nsawam-Accra Highway Fuel Tanker Explosion

The burnt fuel tanker

Three unidentified charred bodies have been recovered by the Ghana Police Service following last Saturday’s fuel tanker explosion on the Nsawam-Accra Highway.

The explosion destroyed seven vehicles and also left several others, including motorcycles, engulfed in flames on the Teacher Mante road near Okanta.

Fire crews were promptly discharged to the scene and managed to contain the blaze.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the tanker ignited following a collision with another vehicle, leading to the widespread destruction.

Police Response

According to police investigations, the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the blast. A police statement, signed by DSP David Fianko-Okyere of the Public Affairs Unit, Eastern Region, confirmed that six vehicles and four motorcycles got burnt.

Two unidentified male charred bodies were found at the scene, as well as one unidentified body in one of the burnt vehicles.

The statement further disclosed that about four persons who sustained injuries due to the blast were rushed to nearby health facilities for medical attention.

“Police has commenced visits to the nearby hospitals to identify victims, while efforts are underway to remove accident vehicles from the scene to ease traffic.

“Motorists commuting on that stretch of the road should reduce their speed and comply with police directives to ensure safety,” part of the statement read.

In a separate incident earlier in the day, a passenger bus collided with an abandoned truck on the Accra-Kumasi route at Hwereso.

Eyewitnesses reported that the bus, carrying several passengers, crashed into the stationary truck, resulting in one victim pleading for help from the wreckage.

Authorities are investigating both incidents.
