Vivo Ghana Marks Safety Day, Calls For Preparedness

Christian Li

Vivo Energy Ghana observed its 2026 Safety Day yesterday under the theme, “Prepare to Respond,” with Managing Director, Christian Li, stressing that safety in the energy sector is not optional.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Li said every critical decision — before a tanker moves, before a nozzle is lifted, and before a product reaches a customer — carries safety implications.

“At Vivo Energy Ghana, safety is not a slogan or a one-day event. It is our culture. It is embedded in our values: Safety, Excellence, Caring, Respect, and Integrity, which guide every decision we make and every operation we undertake,” he stated.

Li noted that true safety leadership means preventing incidents and being prepared to respond effectively. Vivo Energy continues to invest in safety training, risk assessment, emergency response systems, and robust HSSEQ standards.

The company maintains fire suppression systems, emergency shut-off valves, site-specific response plans, and conducts regular drills, audits, and preventive maintenance.

He announced that Vivo Energy Ghana has surpassed 5,600 Goal Zero days with zero harm. “This is not just a statistic. It reflects discipline, accountability, and care,” Mr. Li said.

Environmental Protection Authority CEO, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, warned that environmental incidents like discharge of untreated effluent can damage water resources, ecosystems, and public health.

“Compliance with environmental standards and the adoption of best environmental management practices remain critical to sustainable operation,” she said. Prof. Klutse commended Vivo Energy for embedding environmental responsibility and safety excellence into its operations.

During a panel discussion, Ghana National Fire Service Deputy Director in Charge of Safety, Hawawu Musah, cited crowd control and slow response times as major challenges in fuel emergencies.

“Public attention to safety is very limited in this country. Safety protocols are taken very seriously, but public compliance is limited,” she said.

The event also recognised selected Vivo Energy Ghana staff and partners for upholding the company’s integrity.
