Ishmael Ashitey distributing the stationery to the children of Fire Amour Cluster of Schools
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey, has visited some basic schools in the region to mark ‘My First Day At School’.
The day, which is to make the experience of children on their first day in formal education memorable, was also used to conduct free ear, eye and mouth screening for children.
Accompanied by Ernest Nyagbe, Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Council, and Monica Ankrah Regional Director of Education, Mr. Ashitey interacted with the pupils.
The team visited the Abokobi Presbyterian Nursery & Kindergarten in the Ga East Municipality, Fire Amour Cluster of Schools in the LA Nkwantanag and the Ajiriganor Basic School in the Adenta Municipality, which had 20, seven and 70 pupils present respectively.
Mr. Ashitey encouraged and presented some stationery and snacks to the pupils as part of efforts to help sustain their interest in school.
“My duty today is to come and see how you are faring and to give you a special gift. Next time when I come here, I will give you another gift; so it means that you have to come to school every day,” he said.
The minister also encouraged them to listen to their teachers and be obedient to instructions given.
He reiterated government’s commitment in ensuring higher educational standards by encouraging children to take their education seriously and also to remove all barriers in education such as fees, feeding, school uniforms and other educational materials.
The head teachers of the various schools expressed appreciation and demanded more support.
“The children are increasing so we need more classrooms to accommodate them. Also, we need a playground to help in their physical development,” said Rebecca Goodman Issah, Headmistress of the Ajiriganor Basic School.
