The MCE sharing ideas with the Engineers
The Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMa) in the Greater Accra Region has started a comprehensive dredging of major waterways in the municipality ahead of the rainy season.
Daniel Alexander Nii-Noi Adumuah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), told journalists that the exercise formed part of measures to reduce perennial flooding in the area.
“The Meteorological Services Department has already warned about the onset of heavy rains this year, and it is for this reason that the assembly is embarking on the exercise to allow the free flow of rainwater and in the process save lives and property,” he stated.
“The assembly has limited financial resources and is unable to construct permanent storm drains, however, we believe that this effort, to a large extent, will help control the flow of rainwater through our municipality from the Akwapim Hills,” he indicated.
The MCE was accompanied on the tour by senior personnel from the Municipal Works Department, Urban Roads, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and Physical Planning Unit.
The team also inspected the progress of work at Fafraha, along the Dodowa Road.
The Onyeku stream, according to residents, most overflows its banks and submerges houses and portions of the highway.
It also passes through the entire municipality into the lake at Japan Motors (Ashley Botwe).
The team moved to Amrahia Newton Zongo, Ashyie-Fulanin and Animal Research to inspect the area.
The MCE, who identified houses and church buildings constructed directly in waterways and other low lying points in many areas, indicated that the assembly would seek a court order to pull down such structures.
A resident at the Amrahia Newtown Zongo was not happy about the encroachment upon reserved lands along waterways and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the drains.
He appealed to the MCE to put measures in place to help address the problems.
