But for the Black Stars exit at the round of 16 in the just-ended AFCON 2019, the Ghanaian taxpayers would have had to lose an additional $1.7 million.
Tunisia defeated the Stars on penalties in the round of 16, and at that stage, the country, according to the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, had already spent $4.5 million.
The amount spent on the failed Black Stars was the same amount paid as prize money for the winner, Algeria.
Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, briefing Parliament Wednesday, July 24, 2019, disclosed that the country budgeted $6.3million.
However, with the knock out of the Black Stars at the 1/16 stage in a match against Tunisia, the country saved $1.7million.
The Minister provided the breakdown of the expenses incurred during Ghana’s participation in the tournament in Egypt which he acknowledged was “below expectations”.
According to him, Ghana hired coach Kwesi Appiah with a “clear mandate” to lead the Black Stars win the trophy and end a 37-year drought.
