AMA Decongests Accra

 The Decongested Street Of Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has embarked on a special decongestion exercise to address insanitary conditions in the central business district of Accra and its environs.
They also closed shops whose frontage were found to be filthy, and arrested some recalcitrant drivers who had parked their vehicles on pavements.
Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), who led the Special Taskforce, told Ghana News Agency that they focused areas where traders had invaded pavements to endanger the lives pedestrians and caused vehicular traffic in the metropolis.

“Areas hardly hit by congestions are Makola, Tema Station, Okaishie and Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and the exercise was to raise awareness in the areas for the people to clean the environment, he said.
Mr Adjei Sowah reminded the people that a clean and healthy environment is the surest guarantee of good health and urged them to keep their surroundings clean.

He said: “I will ensure that this exercise of promoting good health along the streets will be sustained and maintained to create a clean and healthy environment in Accra.”

He said the AMA had been applauded for the bold measures taken to decongest the city, saying “this is what the people are looking for and we will make sure to sustain it.

“After eight hours on the streets, it is clear that I have passion and commitment for the job. The streets are going to be an extension of my office because the action is on the field and not in the office.”

The MCE said there was no turning back since the exercise had come to stay to ensure discipline in city.

They gave a hint of moving to Agbogbloshie and Kaneshie Market, especially the footbridge, and Abeka Lapaz on Thursday.
