Amb. Quarcoo Weeps For Ghana Sports

Amb. Ray Quarcoo

Former Ghana Boxing Federation president, Ambassador Ray Quarcoo, has expressed grave worry following the country’s dwindling fortunes in sports, particularly boxing.

Ghana, once a power house in sports (boxing) not only on the continent but across the globe, has failed to live up to that status; a situation which has raised eyebrows in the boxing fraternity.

And the question the former Ghana Boxing boss and Black Stars management member asking is, while less fancied sporting countries like Mozambique, Namibia, Equatorial Guinea are improving by the years, the same cannot be said about Ghana.

To him, Ghana has lost its shine and appeal in the last few years – citing the low representation of sporting disciplines in the ongoing Paris Olympics as a typical example.

As a result, the goodwill sports ambassador is calling for a total overhauling of sports in the country.

He said in an interview, “It is very worrying when Ghana struggle to make impactful representation at the Olympics, I can’t believe boxing couldn’t make it to the Paris Olympics. Of course, times have changed but I must admit that things have really gone out of hand.

“Countries we considered as less fancied keep improving, but the same cannot be said about Ghana.”

Ghana, once a giant in boxing, having produced world-beaters like Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, and Nana Yaw Konadu, failed to make a representation for the ongoing Olympics in Paris.
