The students demonstrating how some of their projects work
AngloGold Ashanti (Iduapriem) Limited, a mining firm based in Tarkwa in the Western Region, has organized its annual career fair in partnership with the University of Mines and Technology UMaT), also in Tarkwa.
The fair, which was themed, ‘Think smart and be innovative,’ formed part of the mining company’s 2016 strategic objectives.
The fair provided the platform for students of UMaT to display their projects which had made positive impact in their communities.
It also gave the opportunity to the students to exhibit their entrepreneurial skills.
The move was in line with the company’s aims of ensuring that communities in which it operates benefit from its presence.
Stephen Asante Yamoah, Mining Manager of AngloGold Ashanti (Iduapriem) Limited, explained that the company collaborated with UMaT because it produces the needed human resources for the mining sector.
He noted that the company was committed to sustainable development in its host communities, particularly Tarkwa.
The company therefore placed emphasis on interventions that empower young people, especially in their education.
“Human development and capacity building is what drives our core value that people are the business and the business are the people,” the mining manager stressed.
He noted that “the company caters well for the young employees and builds their capacities to be able to survive the challenges and current trend of doing business in the gold industry.”
He added that the company has programmes for the development of human resources and institutions like UmaT.
Mr. Yamoah indicated that Iduapriem Mine has survived over the years despite many challenges facing the company.
The mining company has over the years tried to eliminate waste, especially related to cost, to enable it stay in business, he disclosed.
