Kwame Baffoe, aka Abronye DC
The beleaguered Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, aka Abronye DC, has been released on GH¢50,000 bail granted by a Circuit Court in Accra.
The bail granted by His Honour Samuel Bright Acquah, the same judge who remanded him twice, on one occasion using George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Idi Amin Dada as justifications, comes with one surety.
Abronye has been ordered by the court to report to the police once every Wednesday until further directed.
This followed an application by his lawyers who told the court that the accused person’s health had deteriorated while in the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The prosecution did not oppose.
Offensive Conduct
Abronye DC is before the court for two offences; publication of false news and ‘offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace’ in relation to comments he made against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno. Both offences are misdemeanours.
He was arrested on September 8, after honouring an invitation by the police, and was remanded by the court on September 9 to reappear on September 12, after the prosecution told the court the police were still investigating the matter.
According to court documents, the NPP executive on September 3, 2025, during an online programme on Ohia.tv, made a statement with “the intent to cause fear and panic to the public” by claiming that “all the strategic meetings conducted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Akwatia had the IGP in attendance,” a statement he well knew to be false.
He is also accused of making and encouraging offensive and abusive statements against the IGP that “the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tetteh Yohuno has low Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and is the most foolish IGP in the history of Ghana.”
Court documents further claim that the accused had indicated that “the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tetteh Yohuno is the most corrupt IGP in the history of Ghana.”
This, the police say, constitutes a malicious conduct which is likely to provoke a breach of the peace.
He has pleaded not guilty to the two charges, and the police say they are still investigating the case, one of the main reasons why they urged the court to remand him.
Heavy Criticism
His Honour Samuel Bright Acquah came under heavy criticism after denying Abronye DC bail, while using Animal Farm, which preaches inequality, as one of the grounds for the refusal.
The judge did not do himself any favour by further quoting Idi Amin Dada, a Ugandan dictator who is considered one of the most brutal despots in modern world history, to emphasise the limits of freedom of speech.
“It is always said that all persons are equal but in practice, it is not so. Courtesy George Orwell in his book ‘The Animal Farm’, one of the commandments is that all men are equal but some are equal than others. Translated into this case, all men are equal but some are more equal than others,” the judge, who is by law expected to uphold equality, said in his ruling while denying the accused bail.
The judge, in his decision, said Abronye may have been charged with misdemeanours but he will not look at just the charges but the fact that the comments concerned the IGP, and that could put the security of the nation in disrepute.
Criticising the decision, Hamza Suhuyini, a spokesperson for the NDC government, described the decision as defying logic, while Martin Kpebu said on live television that decisions such as this was not part of the reasons “we voted for the NDC.”
