Rev. Prof. Frimpong Manso
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Commission on Small Arms, Rev. Prof. Frimpong Manso, has advised the youth from using guns to earn a living.
In a statement marking Christmas and New Year, he warned that those who do so would soon be in the grips of the law.
He said: “We feel encouraged by the steps government is taking to revamp the economy and to create social and economic opportunities for all Ghanaian especially the youth without which the stakes could be higher. We need a peaceful country for government’s social and economic interventions to flourish and make the desired impact on our national life”.
He indicated that the commission had collaborated with the police and other security agencies to reduce small arms proliferation in the country. On 27th September, 2018, the commission destroyed 2,876 illicit small arms seized by the security agencies.
“We thank His Excellency the President for his determination to ensure internal peace and security of the country. Let us all be aware that the security agencies and the commission are taking steps to address illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country and to help us let every Ghanaian tolerate each other’s views and avoid the use of small arms to settle disagreements and disputes. Please volunteer timely information on illicit small arms activities to the security agencies,” he stressed.
“Let us not lose sight of the need for us to live in peace and harmony as well as be each other’s keeper. We should avoid needless carrying of small arms to social gatherings at all times during this Yuletide. I wish to remind all and sundry that where needless small arms abound there are more preventable deaths,” he added.
In conclusion, he stated: “On behalf of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, let me thank you for your support, and pledge to work even more strenuously in the year ahead.”
