THE ATWIMA Kwanwoma District Assembly (AKDA) in the Ashanti Region has organized a capacity building workshop for its newly sworn- in assembly members on the Local Governance Act (Act936) and the Model Standing Orders for metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.
Facilitators from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi took the 48 participants through various topics at the event, which was held on Friday, June 12, 2020.
The topics included the composition of Act and the assembly, benefits of the Act and its challenges, functions of District Chief Executive (DCE) and the Presiding Member (PM) and assembly members as well as the functional relationship between the DCE and assembly members.
The DCE, Nana Okyere- Tawiah Antwi, in a remark, said the time had come for the district assemblies to build capacity of its members to understand the Standing Orders of the assemblies to enrich debates.
In his view, it was imperative that the assembly members were educated on the rules and regulations of the assemblies.
Mr. Antwi also implored the assembly members to study the Model Standing Orders to familiarize themselves with the proceedings of the assembly.
“I implore you all to make good use of the Acts and the Sections in the Model Standing Orders to enable you to express yourselves freely and confidently during assembly meetings,” he said.
The AKDA DCE also admonished assembly members to work towards addressing the challenges facing their communities to bring development to their respective electoral areas.
The PM of the district, Anthony Kwame Nsiah, on behalf of the assembly members expressed his gratitude to the DCE for organizing such an educative workshop for the members, adding that the day’s workshop capacity building would help them to execute their duties professionally.
