Asunafo Churches Council Speak Out

Members of local council of churches

The local council of churches at Asunafo South in the Brong Ahafo Region had condemned the recent clashes between supporters of the two main political parties- the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which resulted in injuries to people and destruction of the offices of the NPP and NDC, Electoral Commission (EC) and the District Assembly.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Council at a press conference at Kukuom over the weekend.

The statement said that the supporters of the two main political parties were creating fear and panic among residents through the bloodbath and counter accusations which have negatively affected economic activities in the constituency.

The statement, read on behalf of the Council by Rev. Osei Wusu, Head Pastor of Assemblies of God Church said, “What is even worrying is that though the barbaric incidents happened in broad day light in the full glare of the Police not a single soul has been arrested.”

He said that the hands of the police have been tied so they cannot work professionally due to political interference.

Perpetrators of these crimes, irrespective of their party’s colours, must be brought to book, it stated.

Rev. Owusu therefore called on both parliamentary candidates of the two parties, Eric Opoku of the NDC, who doubles as the B/A Regional Minister and George Yaw Boakye of the NPP to call their supporters to order.

The council further asked the two leaders to stop busing voters from various places to transfer their votes in the constituency to stop the clashes.

The council pleaded with the National Peace Council to establish a district peace council to immediately broker peace between various parties.

Head of Communications at the EC, Eric Dzapasu told the media yesterday that his outfit would open the district office at Kukuom to resume the voter transfer exercise.
