Two of the country’s most formidable political giants, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama, are set to clash in a battle for the presidency as they file their nomination papers today.

This will set the stage for a thrilling showdown between the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), as both leaders prepare to submit their papers to the Electoral Commission (EC), signaling the official start of their presidential campaigns.

Bawumia

Dr. Bawumia, accompanied by his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, party leaders, and other officials, will submit his papers at the EC’s headquarters.

He is expected to address party supporters and the public afterwards at the NPP’s headquarters.

“After submitting his presidential nomination, the presidential candidate would address party sympathisers and the general public at the party’s national headquarters at 9:00 a.m.,” the NPP said in a statement.

“Members of the party and the general public are invited to be part of this historic moment of possibility in Ghana’s next chapter,” the statement added.

Mahama

Meanwhile, former President Mahama will also file his nomination papers today, as confirmed by his campaign spokesperson, Joyce Bawah Mogtari.

“This is a momentous occasion for the NDC as we gear up to build the Ghana we want together. Our campaign focuses on jobs, accountability, development, and a better future for all Ghanaians,” Mogtari stated.

Additionally, she announced that Mr. Mahama would embark on a four-day tour of the Bono Region starting Sunday, visiting all 12 constituencies, engaging with traditional councils, religious leaders, and the Bono Regional House of Chiefs.

Significance

Dr. Bawumia, known for his economic prowess and visionary leadership, is seeking to succeed his boss, President Nana Akufo-Addo, while Mr. Mahama, a former head of state, is eyeing a comeback to the presidency.

The filing of papers today, September 9, 2024, marks a significant milestone in the race to the presidency, with both candidates expected to outline their visions and policies for the country’s future.

Some political analysts have said the nation holds its breath as these two political heavyweights prepare to lock horns in what promises to be a fiercely contested election.

According to them, this is a defining moment for Ghana, and the outcome will have far-reaching consequences for the country’s future.
