Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has commissioned the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex at Nalerigu in the North East Region.

Naa Sheriga Sports Complex was built as a personal promise fulfilled by the Vice President to the youth of Nalerigu and its environs.

The sports complex, which is named after the late Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Sheriga, has auxiliary facilities such as a standard astro turf, a VIP stand, changing rooms, stands with a seating capacity of 100 people, offices, as well as expanded standing areas for future expansion.

At a short ceremony, Dr. Bawumia said the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex will not only enhance sports development in the community but it will also be used as a recreational centre, as it can host many social events.

Dr. Bawumia expressed his excitement about the professional work done by the contractor, Wembley Sports Complex.

“I am very impressed, this is one of the best Astroturf I have visited in this country, and I’m very happy with the work and the facilities are first class,” he stated.

The Minister for Youth & Sports, Mustapha Ussif, at the commissioning of the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex, said the country had only three Astroturf, and that the NPP Government has so far built 155 Astroturf across the country.

He disclosed that since independence no government can match the Akufo-Addo Administration in terms of sports infrastructure and sports development.

According to him, the focus of the ministry now is youth development, stressing that district, regional and national level sports competitions will be held to develop talents at the grassroots level.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Wembley Sports Complex, Robert Coleman, indicated that the sports complex is a 70×100 football pitch, which is a standard pitch.

He indicated that the phase two of the project will be the walling of the stadium to ensure that the complex is protected.

Some personalities who graced the occasion include football legends, Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan, Laryea Kingston and Emmanuel Armah ‘Senegal’.
