Ms. Barkisu Suleiman, 35, deserved her award for being the best primary school teacher in the country.

She caught the attention of the panel which observed the performance of entrants for the award when she reluctantly entered for the contest.

She teaches at the Answaru-Deen Islamic School at Fadama, Accra.

Having been in the teaching profession for the past 14 years after her training at the Accra Teachers’ College, she has a lot to tell about the profession she loves so much.

Her reading club and others she has established for children in the school has especially assisted the kids to love reading.

The Best Primary School Teacher and the Chief Imam

“I am passionate about my work and so go beyond the classroom to encourage kids to learn reading. I collaborate with NGOs to acquire reading books for the kids. I previously taught at the Answaru-Deen Islamic School, Darkuman before coming to the present school,” she disclosed.

As a curriculum facilitator, she has contributed immensely to the development of many a child, especially in the Zongo communities.

Ms. Barkisu Suleiman is said to remain behind after classes to assist slow learners to catch up with the day’s lessons, something she has done consistently over the many years that she has been in the classroom.

On how she copes with rather difficult children, she said, “I collaborate with their parents to address such challenges. I also talk to the children. Sometimes I use denials from some opportunities such as field trips to pupils who do not conform to disciplinary standards of the school.”

She came to the DAILY GUIDE in the company of her school headteacher, Seidu Abdulai, who had this to say about her, “she is a hardworking teacher. Classes end at 3pm but she stays behind for two more hours to assist slow learners. She was reluctant in entering for the award consideration. I had to encourage too.”

Ms. Barkisu Suleiman is a Board member of JCI, General Secretary of JCI Ghana. She is also President of the Youth Impact Ghana.

On Monday, she went to show her award to the National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the school she teaches being within his area of residence.
