A spontaneous internet outage has caused major news websites around the world to crash simultaneously.
The website of the UK Government also crashed as a result.
Notable among the big name media houses that suffered the crash are The Guardian, Independent, New York Times, CNN, Bloomberg, Buzzfeed and the Financial Times.
All the above mentioned media houses had their websites vanished from the web at around 11am on Tuesday, June 8, 2021.
All the affected websites displayed the message: “Error 503 Service Unavailable”.
According to reports so far, the outage could be linked to
to Fastly, a cloud computing provider, which underpins a lot of major websites.
Fastly, a cloud computing services provider, has been identified as the cause of the problem. The company runs an "edge cloud", which is designed to speed up loading times for websites, protect them from denial-of-service attacks, and help them deal with bursts of traffic.
