Despite the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed all 46 colleges of education to remain open, pending a final decision on the strike.
This move comes after calls for closure due to the two-month strike, which began on June 14 over unresolved arbitral awards and conditions of service.
In a statement, GTEC emphasized that no decision has been made to close the colleges, nor has the Education Minister directed such action.
“All 46 Colleges of Education should stay open until further notice,” the statement read.
GTEC also addressed ongoing efforts to tackle CETAG’s concerns, including the migration of 20 institutions, payment of research allowances to 44 colleges, and initiation of all-year-round payments.
Additionally, the Commission is working to recruit 2,500 teaching staff to augment the current load and expedite academic work.
This development highlights the government’s commitment to finding a resolution to the strike while ensuring the continuity of education.
As the situation unfolds, students and staff await a final decision, hoping for a swift end to the impasse.
