Outgoing Moderator of The Presby Church,Rev. Prof. Martey interacting with Archbishop Akwasi Sarpong

Archbishop (Emeritus) of Kumasi, Most Rev. Peter Akwasi Sarpong has called on Christians, Muslims and others to live according to the principles of their faith which uphold peace.

“If all Christians and Muslims really want Ghana to progress, we must be peacemakers wherever we are; do not involve yourself with those who only seek to gain materially from these elections,” he remarked.

The octogenarian gave the advice at the second annual Discipline In Leadership Series of the Presbyterian University College  Ghana (PUCG) held under the theme, ‘Election 2016 and the Prospects for Sustainable Peace: Whose Responsibility?”

The event was attended by dignitaries such as the outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Prof. Martey, Archbishop Palmer Buckle, as well as personnel of the Ghana Navy and representatives of political parties.

It was held at the Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Conference Hall last Thursday.

He said virtually all good religions like Christianity and Islam focus on truthfulness, tolerance, peaceful coexistence with others, adding that it is the responsibility of converts to lead peacefully lives.

“If you really believe that Jesus Christ or Mohammed is your master and Lord and have great respect for what he stands for, will you seek power, wealth and honour distastefully?” he quizzed.

He disclosed that humans are social beings who can only survive by coming together to support each other with their different talents.

He said that the system of selection which is essential for multiparty democracy has become a platform for condemnation, lobbying, adding that people have been abused, intimidated, threatened and at times killed during elections.

Touching on the many intercessory prayers and campaigns, he mentioned that God is not keeping peace in his pocket to dish it out to us but expects us to apply intelligence to choose peace and freedom.

President of the Presbyterian University College, Rev. Prof. Adow Obeng said the Discipline in Leadership Lecture Series provides a forum for academics and professionals to objectively discuss topical issues.

Mr. Adow Obeng warned that no politician or political party is worth dying for and called on politicians to recognize their role as stewards and managers of the resources of state.

“We need clear and mature voices to remind us of what’s at stake,” he said.
