CMB Traders, Transport Unions Protest Land Takeover

Traders and transport unions at Accra’s CMB lorry station yesterday staged a protest against what they described as attempts by private developers to seize lands belonging to the station.

The demonstration, which began at the Ridge Roundabout, was led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association, the Commercial Transport Operators, and the Container Owners Association.

The union leaders warned that the alleged encroachment threatens the livelihoods of thousands of traders and drivers who depend on the station daily.

They argued that the move has already displaced several traders, forcing them onto the streets and worsening traffic congestion in the busy CMB area.

The unions further raised concerns about the increased safety risks for both traders and commuters.

Addressing the crowd, union representatives urged President John Dramani Mahama to intervene, stressing that the CMB lorry station plays a vital role in Accra’s transport network and commercial activities.

“This station is not just a place of work; it is the backbone of livelihoods for countless families. Its loss will devastate the community,” one union leader stated.

The unions later presented a petition to government at the presidency. The petition was received by Presidential Staffer, Bridget Otoo, on behalf of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.

She assured the demonstrators that their concerns over the alleged takeover of the lorry station and adjoining market lands would be given serious attention.

“We acknowledge the issues you have raised and will ensure that your petition reaches the Chief of Staff and the President,” Ms. Otoo told the protesters.
