The death-trap gutter in the middle of a road at Denyame
An uncovered gutter in the middle of a busy road at Denyame, a residential area in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, is causing motor accidents on that stretch of the road.
The uncovered gutter is located at a junction on the main Denyame – Santase road. Despite the fact that this road is one of the busiest in the metropolis, the gutter has remained unattended to for several years
Reports gathered by the DAILY GUIDE indicated that because of the open gutter, many accidents had occurred on that busy stretch of the road. Ironically, residents of the area seem unconcerned, while the gutter continues to pose a great danger to road; whereas the metropolitan authorities in charge of roads remain unperturbed as to how to fix the problem.
Some road users speaking to DAILY GUIDE claimed that simply due to the particular nature of this death-trap several people had lost their lives. They said drivers tend to swerve the ditch and ended up causing accidents.
“More cars have been crashing into the gutter, leading to injuries and deaths, but nobody is taking action, and this is pathetic. We don’t seem to value human lives,” a road user lamented.
Another, a taxi driver, Kwadwo Awuah, lambasted the metropolitan authorities, blaming them for “sleeping on their job,” and adding, “Human lives are being lost on the road but nobody is concerned.”
“How much will they spend to construct metal or concrete slabs to cover the death-trap gutter?” lamented another resident.
