DKB and Basketmouth
Glo Laffta Fest, held on Sunday in Accra, was not only a night of humour but one to remember as Africa’s celebrated comedians treated audiences to great rib-cracking performances.
It was one of the highly-anticipated comedy events in August and it lived up to its billing.
The show attracted large a number of comedy fans to the fantasy Dome at the Trade Fair Centre.
There were performances from Ghana’s king of comedy DKB, Basketmouth, Seyi Law, Jacinta, Gordons, Foster Romanus Savador, Bovi, among others.
Hosted by actresses Juliet Ibrahim and Uche Jombo, the Glo Laffta Fest is part of the telecommunications company’s marathon mix of music and comedy which will run between August and October.
Performances on the night started with upcoming comedians to give them the opportunity to build their confidence and sell themselves to GLo audience.
The only mainstream female comedian of the night, Jacinta, got the audience cheering her when she took her turn.
She made jokes about how slow Ghanaian men and aggressive Nigerian men woo their women, among others. Seyi Law was next and he gave a good account of himself. His joke about how he is searching for a policeman to slap him in the streets of Accra got many laughing.
Foster Romanus entered the stage with a rendition of Samini’s song, ‘My Own’, which got an interesting response from the audience. He went on to make jokes about how Seyi Law told all his jokes and he had nothing else to say. One of his jokes didn’t, however, sit well with Nigerians who interpreted the joke to mean that Nigerians are armed robbers. The audience booed at him and he left the stage thanking the audience.
Ugandan comedian Salvador took his turn and equally gave a good account himself. His funny comments about how he is more popular than Ghanaian actor Van Vicker got the audience laughing.
DKB didn’t disappoint when he also took his turn.
He also made jokes about how the police in Ghana are fond of taking bribes from Ghanaians at all cost.
Bovi was also phenomenal. His joke about how he was enjoying a plate of jollof at a restaurant in Ghana only to later realise that it was prepared by a Nigerian chef sent the audience roaring with laughter.
Gordon also had a great show. Moments after entering the stage, he said, “Should anyone in the audience refuse to laugh to my jokes”, it is not that his jokes are not funny; rather the person’s problem is bigger than his joke and that got the audience in stitches.
During his turn, Basketmouth had this to say, “While other countries are fighting over oil, we are fighting over food, jollof is jollof and food is food so let’s just stop.” He got many laughing. He also gave Americans a cool advice on how to stop gun killings. He said they should increase prices of bullets and guns.
The show was attended by some showbiz personalities like Prince David Osei, Van Vicker, Richard Mofe-Damijo, boxer Samir Bastie, among others.
