In a move aimed at ensuring the integrity of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) has destroyed defective ballot papers meant for the Eastern Region.
The exercise, which took place on Tuesday, December 3, was supervised by the Ghana Police Service, the Eastern Regional Elections Security Taskforce, and representatives of various political parties.
The defective ballot papers were recalled by the EC due to security breaches during the printing process.
Similar errors led to the destruction of defective ballot papers for the Ahafo and Volta regions.
The destruction of the defective ballot papers is a significant step towards ensuring the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.
The EC’s proactive approach in addressing the issue has been commended by stakeholders, including the Eastern Regional Director of the EC, John Appiah Baffour.
Baffour expressed satisfaction with the exercise, stating that it was conducted in a transparent and successful manner.
“We brought all the parties together, and the constituency executives of the NPP, NDC, and CPP were all present.
They checked the seals on the ballot paper bags and saw that everything was intact before we offloaded them and burned them,” he said.
The destruction of the defective ballot papers is a reassuring step for voters, who can now have confidence in the integrity of the electoral process.
