EC Chair To Host Africa Election Management Bodies

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), and the President of the Executive Committee of the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA), Jean Mensa, will host a delegation comprising women chairpersons from eight Election Management Bodies (EMBs) in Africa on Monday, August 5, and Tuesday, August 6, 2024 in Accra.

A statement issued by the Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Samuel Tettey, on   Wednesday, July 31, 2024 said the meeting is aimed at offering an opportunity for women leaders of Election Management Bodies to establish a continental network of Senior Electoral Administrators to foster peer support among women in Election Management Leadership in Africa.

The eight Election Management Bodies in Africa, which include Cape Verde, Liberia, Ethiopia, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe and Ghana, would also seek to review international and regional normative frameworks on women’s political participation in Africa.

It said the two-day meeting is being held under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Service Centre for Africa and the United Nation’s Electoral Assistance Division, in collaboration with International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), the Association of African Election Authorities and the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
