The Tema Region of Electricity Company of Ghana is appreciating its stakeholders for helping to keep them informed on various electricity distribution issues in the different operational areas of the Region.
The Tema Region operates with nine districts, namely Tema South, Tema North, Nungua, Ashaiman, Afienya, Juapong, Krobo, Ada and Prampram. For all these districts, Whatsapp group chats have been set up which includes Assembly Members, traditional leaders and other community leaders who share information on outages in their various communities.
Speaking on the positive impact being made by these platforms, the Public Relations Officer for the Region, Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah said that “these platforms offer valuable support, in that, some take pictures of broken, tilted or weak (at the base) poles, they inform us of sagging lines and give us locations so we can attend to these”. She added that “some are in rural areas and bushes and the stakeholders share whatever problem they see, thereby enabling us to attend to the issues faster”.
The PRO who made these remarks during a media discussion added that “we constantly call on the general public to help us protect our network, as a lot of the things we work with are in the public space. These Whataspp groups and the information shared also mean that the stakeholders and community members have heard us and are helping us to keep our network in check”.
The PRO added that “there are indeed instances where customers will not have supply due to faults withing a small section of the distribution system and this especially makes us appreciate our stakeholders the more for the support and information sharing as we are able to sort out such problems”.
Ms. Mensah thanked the stakeholders for their continued support while urging them to “continue supporting our work and holding us accountable and informed on important issues relating to electricity distribution”.
