Lawyer Efua Ghartey has been elected President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

She polled 1,208 votes while Kwadzo Dzakpasu polled 1,060 votes in an election held at the Bar Conference in Kumasi.

She had participated in the election on two occasions, but lost to Tony Forson and Yaw Acheampong Boafo on both occasions.

She is the spouse of Joe Ghartey, Member of Parliament for Essikado Ketan in the Western Region and a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

She co-founded Ghartey & Ghartey with Joe Ghartey in 1994.

In her acceptance speech, the GBA President-elect expressed her joy to be elected the first female President of the Association.

She promised to promote the interests of lawyers, to protect the rule of law, and to advance the cause of justice in the country.

“I am humbled and honoured to be the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association, this indeed is something new that the bar for the first time has entrusted leadership to the ladies,” she said.

“We shall make you proud. We shall make sure that you never regret this choice. What we ask for moving forward is that not only do you pray for us but also hold our hands,” she added.
