Former Adom FM morning show host, Ekourba Gyasi, has taken over Atinka FM’s popular morning show, ‘AM Drive.’
Ekuorba was in his elements when he took over the console yesterday in his first day in the driver’s seat – formerly occupied by Kwame Adinkrah – who left the place for Kumasi after barely a year in Accra.
Reports were rife last week that the seasoned radio host had been signed on at Atinka Fm, owned by JAM Media, a subsidiary of the Tobinco Group, but he remained tight-lipped on the issue.
General Manager of Atinka FM, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, confirmed that his outfit had secured the services of the ace morning show host, whose contract had been “signed, sealed and delivered.”
Mr Dwumfuor said, “Radio is all about creativity and direction. Ekourba has been in the business for years. He has studied the trend of the radio industry in Ghana. He is the perfect choice for Atinka FM’s morning show.”
According to him, every radio presenter has his or her own style of presenting shows, adding that Ekourba has something unique that makes him outstanding on air.
Ekuorba’s movement to Atinka FM is a step further for him, and he is expected to put his rich radio experience to good use.
Atinka FM has fended off competition from several high-ranking radio stations, which had reportedly been making frantic efforts to persuade Ekourba to join their teams.
Ekourba comes to Atinka FM with his ace producer of many years, Kojo Addo. Ekourba Gyasi Simprimu, real name, Collins Ekourba Gyasi, is believed to be one of the best show hosts in Ghana.
He has been a regular morning show host since his internship in 2002.
He was nicknamed Simprimu by Wofa Sekyere Popro Boateng, a newspaper reviewer, on his then morning show programme on Adom FM – ‘Adom Dwaso Nsem.’
With his fearlessly brilliant and biting politically-laced humour, Ekourba Gyasi tries to reduce the frustration of Ghanaians caused by successive government’s missteps and hypocrisies.
Ekourba’s morning show is a blend of information, entertainment and interactions with his listeners.
He brings freshness into the way radio shows are carried out in the mornings in Ghana.
He admits that his radio prowess contributes to the occasional awkward encounters.
“It can get a little weird,” he says.
“A gorgeous 25-year-old will come up to me at an event and say ‘I’ve been listening and following you to any radio station you move to, it’s great, it’s flattering and it’s something.”
His wit and incisive interviewing skills have made him a household name.
Ekourba’s interviewees sometimes hesitate to engage him because of his probing style.
Even though he is not a product of any law school, some people he had interviewed refuse to believe so.
Born on Wednesday, 18 July in the mid 70s in Kumasi, Ekourba is a native of Ejura Sekyeduamse in the Ashanti Region who grew up at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.
Affectionately called K Gyasi, Ekourba started radio broadcasting as a student at the University of Education Winneba, where he pioneered radio lectures (Radio Distance Learning) on Windy Bay FM (University of Education).
He has hosted various shows on Uniqq FM, Sunrise FM, Happy FM, Adom FM, Hot FM, Top FM and currently Atinka FM.
The ace broadcaster is a private man who rarely speaks publicly of his personal life. He is married to Priscilla Nana Yaa Densua, a fashion designer and supervisor at Woodin, with two sons – K. Gyasi Jnr, Kwame Ansah Gyasi and a daughter, Akua Fowaa.
He attended Akrokerri Training College and the University of Education, Winneba. Ekourba holds a first degree in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and currently pursuing an LLB from the University of London Distance Programme.
Many believe he might become a lawyer or representative of the people in a future parliament of Ghana.
