Fake BNI Man Drowns

A young man who paraded himself as an official of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) met his untimely death yesterday in a reported attempt to extort monies from some teachers in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.

The man allegedly hatched a plan to visit some schools in the district to tell the teachers that he could assist them to retrieve their salary arrears with ease, when the incident happened.

The deceased, Moro Ibrahim, 20, allegedly got drowned in a stream when he tried escaping arrest.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that Ibrahim, who hailed from Ayiem in the region, was reported to have gone to the only public basic school in Ewusiejoe near Agona Nkwanta in Ahanta West on Tuesday posing as a BNI official.

A source at the school told journalists that Ibrahim demanded the identity cards and the certificates of the teachers in addition to a fee to enable him forward their names to Accra for their salary arrears to be cleared for them.

One teacher, who became suspicious, reportedly called a BNI friend in the district capital at Agona-Nkwanta to verify whether it was indeed the BNI that was embarking on that exercise.

The BNI official quickly rushed to the school but upon hearing of the presence of the security person, the suspect took to his heals but was given a hot chase by some residents.

Ibrahim eventually dived into the major stream in the community. He was not seen again till yesterday when his lifeless body was seen floating on the water.

The body has since been retrieved. Ahanta West District police Commander, DSP Samuel Osei who confirmed the story, indicated that the family of the deceased had since gone for the body for burial whilst investigation continued.
