Fake ‘Security Men’ Busted In Galamsey Extortion Racket

The fake officers. INSET: Confiscated items

THE NKAWIE Divisional Police has arrested four individuals for allegedly posing as National Security operatives to extort money from small-scale miners in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, who claimed to be enforcing anti-galamsey laws, were caught storming mining sites and demanding money from miners. Police investigations revealed that three of the suspects posed as security personnel, using a private pump-action gun to intimidate victims.

A pickup vehicle used in the operation is registered in the name of the Atwima Kwanwoma Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Simon Alolga. Police are investigating how the vehicle was used in the illegal operations. This incident follows a similar operation in October 2025 where armed impostors posing as security personnel were arrested.

The Ghana Police Service has warned against impersonating security personnel, saying it erodes public trust and undermines efforts to combat illegal mining. The suspects are in custody and will be processed for court.
