Twelve children with different forms of heart deficiencies have undergone a free heart surgery at the Paediatric Intensive Unit (PIU) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
Medical team from the Boston Children’s Hospital in the US teamed up with their colleagues at KATH to perform the free heart surgeries to help save and preserve the live of the beneficiaries.
Led by Dr Francis Fynn Thompson, a renowned paediatric heart surgeon from the Boston Children’s Hospital team, had been visiting KATH to perform the surgeries for free every year for some time now.
This year, the team also refurbished KATH Paediatric Unit at the end of the exercise to make the place conducive for healthcare. They also donated medical items to the unit to support their work.
Worth several thousands of US dollars, the donated items include five electrocardiograms, two monitors, four pulse oximeters, two ventilation, disposables, among other medical tools.
The Head of the KATH PIU, Dr John Adabie Appiah, expressed appreciation to the Boston Children’s Hospital for their huge support.
According to him, the annual benevolent gesture of Dr Francis Fynn Thompson and his team from the US has helped saved the lives of several children who come from poor homes.
Dr Francis Fynn Thompson, in his succinct remarks, assured that his team would continue to provide the needed technical and logistical support to help KATH perform heart surgeries for children.
