Govt Hints Of PPA Act Amendment

Goosie Tanoh

The government has announced plans to amend the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) Act to formulate laws for the purchase of made-in-Ghana goods and promote local manufacturing as part of the 24-hour economy policy.

The Presidential Advisor on the 24-hour economy, Goosie Tanoh, stated during a post-Budget Parliamentary Workshop that the initiative is geared towards supporting growth in the manufacturing sector while promoting local consumption.

He further explained that another component of the 24-hour economy is the Go Ghana programme noting that the programme is a mobilization of passionate Ghanaians who care about the nation and also promote made-in-Ghana goods.

“Another component of the 24-hour economy is a programme called Go Ghana. And that Go Ghana is a mobilisation programme where every Ghanaian who cares about their community, about the country, will give in their effort… whether it’s environmental or sanitation, but also buying made in Ghana goods”.

He further explained that the PPA law will help boost local manufacturing and help grow the economy.

He said, “So the only way to institutionalize it is to look at the PPA law and see how we can offer a guaranteed offtake for local manufacturing and local content so we can grow our economies, learn from the Asian tigers who made it a priority to buy their goods, and today look at where they are and how everybody compares us to them”.

Mr. Tanoh added that the policy would be private-sector driven but, the government will seek minimal funding in the mid-year budget review.
