The government of Ghana has announced its intention to seek approval for US$338 million to finance the reconstruction of a crucial section of the Accra-Tema motorway.
The project aims to reconstruct 27.7 kilometers of the motorway, extending from the Tema enclave to Tesano and Achimota.
Patrick Boamah, Vice Chairman of Parliament Finance Committee, revealed this information during a briefing with members of the Parliamentary Press Corps on Monday, December 11, 2023.
The joint committee of Finance and Roads and Transport is currently reviewing the agreement, which, when approved, will span a period of 37 months to complete the extensive scope of work. The reconstruction is expected to bring significant improvement to transportation in the affected areas.
In response to concerns regarding the project’s cost, Mr. Boamah clarified that the Accra-Tema Motorway alone spans 19.5 kilometers, while the reconstruction project encompasses 27.7 kilometers. The additional distance will include the construction of the Apenkawa Interchange and the Neoplan Interchange.
He highlighted the comprehensive nature of the project, emphasizing that it will take approximately three years or more to complete, depending on the progress of the project. The reconstruction will be undertaken as a joint venture between the government and Maripoma Limited.
Once approved, the reconstruction of the Accra-Tema Motorway is expected to provide improved transportation infrastructure and increased connectivity for the surrounding areas. The government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s transportation network will undoubtedly benefit both commuters and businesses in the region.
