Central Regional Minister, Justina Marigold Assan, has showcased the developmental projects undertaken by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in the region since 2017.
Taking her turn at the town hall meeting series in Cape Coast, the Regional Minister said the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia led NPP government has undertaken significant infrastructure development in education, health, road, and other socio-economic sectors.
Giving an account of projects under education, Mrs. Assan said 350 new school facilities have been constructed since 2017.
These, she said, include 222 basic schools and 128 senior high schools (SHS) and technical schools.
In a further breakdown, Mrs. Assan said the new SHS and technical school facilities consist of 58 classroom blocks, 43 dormitories, three dining halls, three administration blocks, four assembly halls, six libraries and ICT/Science laboratories, and other facilities such as washrooms and infirmaries.
“From 2017 to date, the government has provided substantial logistical support to the region’s education sector,” she said.
“This includes one Land Cruiser Prado for the Regional Director of Education, 22 pick-up vehicles for district education directors, 10 pick-ups for heads of senior high and technical schools, 34 buses, 153 motorcycles for School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs), and 455 laptops for schools under the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP),” she disclosed, adding, “These efforts have helped improve mobility and access to educational resources for students and staff.”
Key road projects completed in the Central Region according to the Regional Minister include the 31.2km Assin Foso–Assin Praso Road, the dualisation of the 30km Kasoa–Winneba Road, and the 12.5km Ojobi–Senya Beraku Road.
“Other projects include the rehabilitation of the Asikuma–Bedum–Besease Road, construction of the Twifo Praso Bridge, and the reconstruction of the Essaim–Assin Manso Road,” she said.
Mrs. Assan said additional road improvements have been made in Dunkwa, Awisem, Cape Coast, and Kasoa, with bitumen surfacing and asphaltic overlays enhancing access throughout the region.
She also highlighted the Agenda 111 healthcare projects currently underway in districts such as Assin North, Assin South, Gomoa East, and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira.
In the area of water and sanitation, Mrs. Assan said 2,195 boreholes have been constructed, serving over 1.7 million people in rural communities.
Additionally, she indicated that 261 CCTV cameras have been installed in key areas of the region to enhance security, feeding data to the Regional Police Headquarters.
The Elmina Fishing Port and market infrastructures have undergone extensive rehabilitation, including the construction of sheds, toilets, an administration block, and a fish market.
The completion of these projects, she stressed, has improved commercial activity in the region, with 539 young entrepreneurs trained in business under the BizBox programme, and over 1,500 youth receiving grants and start-up kits.
