Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has assured the public that government is fully aware of the transport difficulties facing commuters and is actively working to resolve them.
She gave the assurance last Friday, during a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Local Government, and stakeholders in the transport sector.
Speaking at the meeting, the Vice President acknowledged the challenges confronting commuters, including traffic congestion, long queues at bus terminals, and rising transport costs.
“Sometimes, the problem is caused by several factors, including exploitation by some drivers, long queues at bus stops and terminals, congestion, and the stress that comes with the situation,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described the situation as a shared national concern that requires collective effort to resolve.
“We want Ghanaians to know that government is not blind to the situation. We see it, we care, and we do not think it is somebody else’s problem. It is everybody’s problem, which is why we must work together to find solutions,” she stated.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang announced that the government will support both public and private transport operators with the supply of new high-occupancy buses to ease pressure on the transport system. According to her, President John Dramani Mahama has directed that urgent measures be taken to strengthen existing transport services.
“His Excellency has asked me to assure you that government will support Metro Mass, Aayalolo, and the private sector with new high-occupancy buses to augment services in the medium term,” she stressed.
The Vice President also disclosed that government would prioritise the rehabilitation of buses currently grounded due to mechanical faults.
“We will expedite repair processes to ensure more buses are put back on the road as soon as possible,” she added.
