Gwiraman SHS Authorities Did Not Mishandle Deceased Student – GES

Nathaniel Yankey

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says the untimely death of a final year student of Gwiraman Senior High School (SHS), Nathaniel Yankey, was not as a result of his mishandling by authorities of the school.

In a statement dated July 15, 2020, and signed by its Head of Public Relations, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, GES explained that Gwiraman SHS is an E-Block Community Day School with no boarding facility.
Media reports had suggested, the student died on campus as aresult of lack of attention extended to him by the school authorities.

However, the statement said, some parents including parents of the deceased have hired their own private hostel for their wards where they reside and commute to and from school on daily basis.

Such hostels are run by private individuals and not by the school authorities, the statement pointed out.

It says the deceased, Nathaniel Yankey, left the hostel to his parents’ house when he felt unwell last Friday and the school was notified.

“Management of Gwiraman SHS called today Wednesday 15th July 2020 to check on him and was told he had passed on this morning,” according to the statement.

“Management of GES wishes to indicate that the unfortunate death of one of our students was not the mishandling of a sick student on campus as the 3news.com story alleges,” the statement observed.
