Isaac Amoo addressing the media
George Isaac Amoo, who has been defeated twice in the Greater Accra Regional chairmanship race of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has declared his intention to contest for the position again in the party’s primaries slated for June 2018.
Mr Isaac Amoo lost for the second time in 2014 to then incumbent and now Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey.
Mr Amoo polled 205 votes while Mr Ashitey garnered 344 votes out of a total of 550 votes.
With Mr Ashitey out of the scene, Mr Isaac Amoo believes he stands the chance of winning the position.
Announcing plans to contest in the upcoming primaries at a press conference on Tuesday in Accra, the Greater Accra NPP Chairman hopeful indicated that if given the nod, he would assemble a team of able men and women of the party to “get our people to appreciate the good works being done by our government.”
He pledged to unite supporters and members of the party in the region to ensure that the NPP under President Akufo-Addo retains power in 2020.
“All of you in different ways have brought me here today. I will preserve, restore hope and consolidate our gains in 2020,” he said.
“I hereby declare my intention to contest the position of chairman for the Greater Accra Region,”
Mr Amoo, who is desperate to win this time round, said “the decision to contest was informed by the desire to empower party foot-soldiers and motivate people at the grassroots to get involved in the affairs of the party to consolidate our gains in 2020.’
He indicated that “those who think Election 2020 will be a walkover should revise their notes and take a cue from history. Our fortunes in election will be dependent on how well we manage, resource and marshal our grassroots effectively for the daunting task ahead.”
Mr Isaac Amoo said that “NPP foot soldiers who have worked and toiled in the trenches over the years to ensure that the NPP tastes power would not be left behind.
“If our grassroots members continue to live in poverty, it would be difficult for them to work hard for us. During my tenure as chairman, I will empower the grassroots members for the daunting task ahead of us,” he added.
