Japanese Grabbed Over Romance Scam

The Ghana Police Service is holding a Japanese national, Morikawa Hikawu, over a romance scam following a request by Interpol Japan, an official statement said on Tuesday, 2 August 2022.

A statement from the Police explained that the suspect is expected to be removed from Ghana and handed over to Japanese authorities.

According to the Police “The Interpol unit of the Ghana Police Service is working with the Ghana Immigration Service, Interpol Tokyo, and the Japanese Embassy in Ghana for his removal,”

Further reports gathered indicated that Hikawu was detained in Ghana in July for allegedly staying in the country illegally.

Japanese police say he and other members of his group swindled twonpeople of $11,000.

They say the group used false identities, such as an American writer, on a matchmaking app.

They tricked people into falling in love and asked them for money, including living expenses.
