Journalists Honour Dampare

COP/Dr. Dampare being decorated by the Special Guest of Honour at the occasion, Her Ladyship the Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo

Commissioner of Police (COP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been granted an honorary membership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in recognition of his exemplary service to the public and outstanding relationship with the media and by extension the public.

The honour was bestowed upon him during the 23rd GJA annual awards ceremony at Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra last Saturday.

By the honour, he has become the first superior police officer to be recognized by the GJA. A lot of factors went into the recognition. COP Dampare has endeared himself to the media in a manner which distinguishes him from other top cops.

During the murder of the late J.B. Danquah, he, as the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, was almost on his toes leading the charge on the hunt for the suspected killers. It paid off and the suspects are before court shortly after which he was transferred to the Police Command and Staff College, Winneba.

Managing information at the time of the hunt and even immediately after the heinous crime demanded finesse which Dr. Dampare did not lack as he addressed the dual concerns of the bereaved family and delivering on his mandate as a professional.

Those who heard about the honour done him said they were not surprised because as they put it “he deserves it.”

Dr. Dampare is currently the Director General in charge of Welfare of the Police Service.
