The death-trap bridge at Esereso Adagya
A bridge at Esereso Adagya in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, which has served as a death trap for residents, has finally been awarded on contract to be fixed.
According to the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bosomtwe, Joseph Kwasi Assuming, the government wanted the weak bridge to be fixed without further delay after it reportedly led to the deaths of some residents after heavy rains.
This year alone, seven people have been drowned when they tried crossing the bridge after heavy rains.
The DCE said on radio in Kumasi that government was aware of the danger that the weak bridge posed to the people and had to intervene.
“Government has awarded the Adagya bridge to a contractor by name Attachi and the contractor is now preparing to start work, latest in three weeks’ time,” he said.
The Bosomtwe DCE said the contract is a “state of emergency contract”, and the contractor is supposed to use a maximum of six months to construct the bridge.
“Until the contractor starts work, I will entreat the residents of Esereso Adagya and its immediate surroundings not to cross the bridge when it rains,” he said.
The Bosomtwe DCE observed that most of the roads at Esereso Adagya were in a deplorable state but gave an assurance that plans were in the pipeline to fix such roads as well.
