SOME residents of Lower Manya-Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region have asked the National Identification Authority (NIA) to come and re-register some persons within the area because of errors detected in an earlier registration.
According to them, during an earlier exercise in some centres, a Western North Region code was used instead of Eastern Region.
As a result of the error, persons who registered on day one and two had their cards printed in the Western North Region instead of the Eastern Region.
Elias Aduimado, a Supervision Registration Officer said in a statement that “this information was immediately communicated to the NIA headquarters in Accra but up to today, one year on, NIA headquarters has not made any efforts to transfer the cards from the Western North Region to their appropriate locations in the Eastern Region.”
He lamented that the majority of the affected people trooped to the NIA District Office in Odumase Krobo to take their cards only to discover the Western North entry.
The statement said, “The innocent citizens are made to suffer for the errors committed by the NIA officials. The NIA must accept the blame and apologise to the affected persons rather than adopting a lukewarm attitude.”
Meanwhile, the NIA rules say once a person is registered, he or she cannot undergo the exercise again, making it difficult for the affected people to get their cards for business purposes and also to defend their nationality.
Meanwhile, attempts to speak to the NIA officials at the time of filing this report, proved futile.
