Abraham Sambou receiving treatment
A final year student of Labone Senior High School (SHS) who was assaulted by Senior House Master of the school, Mr. Eric Agyemang, is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Accra.
The incident, officially reported to the Cantonments Police, prompted a petition from Sambou’s family to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for a thorough investigation.
Abraham Sambou was seen by a general physician on June 25, 2024, and subsequently referred to the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) and Ophthalmology departments for further treatment.
The assault allegedly occurred on June 18, 2024, when Mr. Agyemang reportedly slapped Abraham after being falsely accused of using a mobile phone by the school prefect, Blessing Elisha Nyamekye.
Abraham, who denied the allegations, was also prevented from attending classes and detained without food or water until his family arrived at 2pm to meet with school management.
The family has petitioned the GES to investigate the incident, which has resulted in the assaulted boy’s indefinite expulsion from the boarding house. The family expressed concern over Abraham’s mistreatment, particularly as he is in his final year preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and would find difficulty commuting daily from Kasoa to Labone SHS.
They reported that Abraham has been experiencing severe headaches and pain in his left ear and eye, necessitating initial treatment at the Amanfro Polyclinic followed by the current treatment he’s receiving at the Police Hospital.
The petition alleges that during a meeting with the school’s management, Mr. Agyemang admitted to slapping Sambou, justifying his actions by claiming Sambou lied about his father’s availability.
According to the Sambou family, upon a meeting with the headmistress, Mrs. Rejoice Aku Acorlor allegedly supported Mr. Agyemang’s actions, stating she would have acted even more harshly.
Additionally, the family raised concerns about Mr. Agyemang’s suitability as an educator, citing a photograph on his WhatsApp profile showing him holding a gun. They argued that this image reflected an intimidating demeanour inappropriate for a supervisory role in an educational setting.
The family has called on the GES and the Ministry of Education to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, revoke Sambou’s expulsion, hold Mr. Agyemang accountable, and monitor Mrs. Acorlor’s conduct to ensure fair treatment of students.
They also expressed concerns about the senior house master’s history of physical abuse and intimidation of students, emphasising the need for swift action to protect students’ rights and ensure a safe learning environment at Labone SHS.
Attempt by the paper to reach out to Mr. Agyemang to respond to the allegation has proven futile.
