Law Students Resit Leaked Papers

Prospective students of the Ghana School of Law, who sat for the 2018 entrance examinations, are to rewrite the papers following massive leakage of the questions.

The entrance exams, which is organised by the General Legal Council’s Independent Examination Committee (IEC), was heavily criticized following reports that the examination paper and its accompanying marking scheme had been leaked and were all over WhatsApp platform.

This, according to the reports, gave some candidates unfair advantage over others who did not get access to the leaked question paper and the marking scheme.

Copies of the leaked documents, which were sighted by DAILY GUIDE, have a compulsory question which is a case study where candidates were expected to identify infractions in a contract between a construction firm and hotel.

The marking scheme indicated that candidates who were able to answer the question accurately stand the chance of getting a total of 35 marks.

Following the embarrassing situation, the Independent Examination Committee (IEC) of the GLC, has decided to set a supplementary compulsory question for the candidates who had earlier sat for the exams.

A notice issued by the acting Executive Secretary of the IEC stated that the examinations have been scheduled for August 17, 2018 at 10:00am at the same centre at the University of Ghana, Legon.

The 45-minute compulsory question, according to the GLC, will be based on one of the subject areas, including Law of Contract, Law of Torts, Criminal Law, Law of Immovable Property, Ghana Legal System and Methods, Equity and Succession, Company Law and Commercial Law.

The notice states that only candidates who sat for the first examination are eligible to rewrite the supplementary entrance examination.

“All registered applicants are expected to use the Examination Index Numbers previously provided to them by the Ghana School of Law,” the notice stated.

Leakage

It would be recalled that news broke out the 2018 Ghana School of Law Entrance examination organised by the General Legal Council (GLC) last Friday had been leaked.

The information indicated that moments before the writing of the examinations, the question paper and its accompanying marking scheme were making rounds on social media.

Interestingly, some candidates, who spoke to DAILY GUIDE on condition of anonymity, claimed the question paper and the marking scheme started making rounds on Whatsapp in the morning before the actual paper was written.

They claimed most of the candidates who wrote the examination at the New ‘N’ Block and Cafeteria of the University of Ghana were among those who had unfair access to the questions and the marking scheme.

Interestingly, the sources claimed they were not informed about any compulsory questions, only for them to realise that there was one, and those of their colleagues who were privy to the alleged leakage had an unfair advantage over them.

Probe/Cancellation

Some of the candidates who took part in the entrance examination this year called on the GLC to investigate the leakage.

They claimed that after six months of tutorials and sleepless nights of learning, it would be unfair for some to have access to the paper at the expense of others.

They, therefore, called on the GLC to investigate the alleged leakage of the questions.
