Madina Residents Protest Petrol Station Location

Sel Filling Station, Madina

RESIDENTS OF Madina New Road, Asanka Local, Tatanaa Electrical Area and some students of the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), have protested the citing of SEL Energy Ghana fuel station at the southern gate of UPSA. They have therefore, called on members of the public to join them in mounting pressure on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to close down the filling station.

In a statement, the residents, represented by a group called United to Save Lives Movement (USLM), expressed worry that the presence of the fuel station in the area is a threat to lives and properties and so it must be shut down to forestall any fire   outbreak.

They also expressed displeasure over the manner in which the EPA, NPA and the GNFS have remained reluctant in addressing their concerns.

“The structure as it remains continues to be a threat to residents and students. And while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has refused to act and abide by the primary laws governing the planning of a fuel station, we see a well thought-of plan between them and Sel Energy Ghana to be more profit-centred institutions than law abiding ones that do not care about the well-being of members of the society,” according to them.

The statement was jointly signed by Fred Ohene Offei-Addo and Desmond Bress-Biney on behalf of USLM.
