The late Major Maxwell Mahama
The much-touted autopsy report on the late Major Maxwell Mahama, who was lynched at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region, has been submitted to an Accra Central Circuit Court.
Major Mahama was on a 20-kilometre walk when he was reportedly mistaken for a thief by some women from whom he stopped to buy snails and was lynched on May 29, 2017.
Part of his body was burnt in the process.
The pathologist assigned to perform the autopsy and the police battled over the report six months after his death, blaming each other for the delay in releasing the report.
Dr. Lawrence Edusei, a pathologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, had to be summoned by the court to explain the delay in the release of the report.
He attributed the delay in releasing the report to the lack of cooperation from the police but the police denied his statement, maintaining that if he had any difficulties, he should have confronted the police administration with them.
At yesterday’s sitting, the court, presided over by Mr Ebenezer Kweku Ansah, announced that the autopsy report on the slain soldier had finally been submitted to the court’s registrar.
He subsequently ordered the registrar to provide a certified true copy of the autopsy to the police.
Committal
Barring any last-minute hitches, the court will begin committal proceedings against the 22 accused persons, who have been remanded into custody for allegedly murdering the late Major Mahama.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) George Amega, told the court that the police have concluded their investigations and were on the verge of finalising their report for the Attorney General.
He said subject to the AG’s advice, the police will hand over the case to the AG’s Department to begin the committal proceedings.
He prayed the court for a brief adjournment for the police to conclude their report.
The judge, Ebenezer Kweku Ansah, adjourned the case to December 12, 2017 for the AG to appear in court to begin the committal.
New suspects
Twenty-two persons suspected to have participated in the gruesome murder of the late Major Mahama at Denkyira-Obuase in the Central Region have since been remanded into custody by the court.
The suspects are facing charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Last week, an Accra Central District Magistrate Court, issued a warrant for the immediate arrest of six persons who are allegedly involved in the murder of the soldier.
The suspects are Yaw Amankwa aka Bulla, Nana Kwadwo aka Nana Ajo, Maame Dedeekor, Tikwah, Yaw Boadu and Kofi Ahenkora.
The six suspects are suspected to be hiding in Ghana and neighbouring countries.
