An Accra District Court has imposed a fine of GH¢360 on a trader for failing to provide food, education, shelter and healthcare to his five kids.
Ali Zebo, a trader, would in default go to jail for 10 days.
The prosecutor Detective Sergeant Simon Tekpor told the court, presided over by Mr. Worlanyo Kotoku, that the complainant is a 32-year-old petty trader residing at James Town, Accra.
The accused, prosecution said, is also a 42-year-old petty trader residing at Mataheko also in Accra.
The accused and complainant divorced five years ago but have five kids aged 15, 13, 10, 8 and 6.
Prosecution said the accused person for the past five years has failed to provide for the needs of his children.
According to the prosecutor, several efforts made by the complainant and other family members for the accused person to take responsibility of his children have failed.
In March last year, the complainant reported the matter to the family tribunal and the court ordered him to pay GH¢500 a month for upkeep of the kids with effect with from June 2016 but he defaulted.
The prosecution said a report was made to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the accused person was arrested and arraigned before court.
