Massive Clean Up For Tema

The minister addressing the assembly members

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly is set to begin a three-day cleaning exercise, as part of the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ initiative, in preparation for the 66th Independence Day celebration activities to be held on March 6.

This information was shared by the Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, during his meeting with members from the 29 MMDCEs in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the minister, the exercise is scheduled for March 2 to 4, 2023 in the Tema area.

The Tema area will be divided into 14 zones, with each zone being supervised by two assemblies who will handle the affairs of their assigned zones.

Security personnel of about 600 men are expected to be dispersed to partake in the exercise as well as an additional 600 members from the City Response Team (CRT). Task force members from each assembly in the region are also expected to partake in the cleaning exercise.

The minister, therefore, called on all individuals and business owners in Tema to partake in the cleaning exercise in order to avoid flouting the law.

“By the Operation Clean Your Frontage by-law, they are expected to come out and clean their frontages. If they do not do it, we will get the assembly to issue them with a summons and fine them. So we are hoping that everyone will use their all in supporting this exercise,” he said.

The minister also hopes that with the cleaning exercise happening in Tema, it would revive the dull nature of the operation throughout the country, especially Accra.

“Frankly speaking the cleaning exercise in Accra has lost its fire, so with us beginning here we hope to go back to Accra and assess what went wrong with the Operation Clean Your Frontage exercise in the area and hit the ground running again,” he stated.

The 66th Independence Day Greater Accra Regional celebration is scheduled to be held in Tema, in efforts by the government to reduce the general cost of the annual celebrations. According to the regional minister, this year’s celebration is estimated to save the government about 30 million Ghana cedis.

The celebration will be held at the Tema Sports Stadium and will also be marked by a free health screening, NHIS registration, boxing bout, an inter-MMDCA quiz for JHS students, and a football gala.
