MCE Clear Hawkers

The Chief Executive of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Musah Superior, has embarked on an exercise to rid the streets of the city of filth and hawkers as part of efforts to help the President to achieve his goal of making Ghana the cleanest country in the sub-region.

Shortly after assuming office, Musah Superior undertook various exercises aimed at ensuring sanity in the regional capital.

The exercises led to the eviction of traders and hawkers from the streets and pedestrian walkways, which facilitated movement of people in the regional capital.

However, the decision by the MCE to decongest the city angered some individuals, including some members of the NPP in the region.

According to the Northern Regional Organizer of the NPP, Alhaji Rashid Cop, the decongestion exercise was ill-timed.

He also stressed that the MCE did not broadly consult the stakeholders before embarking on the decongestion exercise.

He added that the activities of Musah Superior are to a large extent ‘detrimental’ to the party and could deny the party votes in the next general elections.

Alhaji Rashid Cop urged the MCE to focus on initiating developmental and infrastructural projects which would encourage the electorate to vote for the party.

The regional organizer said the activities of the MCE could cause the defeat of the party in the region come 2020.

Mr Superior revealed that the assembly, after a series of meetings with the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders and heads of various market women and traders associations, would roll out a more effective exercise which would improve sanitation in the city.

He indicated that they would work hard to ensure the attainment of the aims of the exercise.

Mr Superior warned members of the Tamale Taskforce against the use of violence and admonished them to report any attacks on them to the police for investigations and prosecution.

He also called on the general public to support President’s vision of making Ghana the cleanest country in West Africa.
