The Ministry of Education (MoE) has unveiled a new technological device known as ‘i-box’ to improve teaching and learning in second cycle schools in the country.

The ‘i-box’ will help the students learn their core subjects using their laptops, desktop and mobile phones.

The technology, developed using local expertise, does not rely on the internet. The students must be within the radius of the “i-box” to have access to questions, teaching materials on four core subjects, including Mathematics, English Language, Social Studies and Integrated Science in the various schools.

This, according to the Minister of Education, Professor Nana Jane Opoku– Agyeman, would not only make learning exciting, but also boost the learning of ICT among students.

She said plans had been put in place to add other subjects to the ‘i-box’ learning device.

She said so far government have put measures in place to provide ‘i-box’ to 125 low performing schools to improve their performance.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman said absenteeism in the various schools have dropped drastically and expressed her gratitude to teachers for cooperating with the ministry to improve education.

She stated that the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) re-sit instituted by the Ministry has given the chance to many school dropouts to re-write the papers.

“Some passed their re-sit exams and have furthered their education to the next level while others now have certificates to do other things.

Touching on infrastructural development, the Education Minister, said government has put up several schools to improve enrolment for students in both basic level and tertiary institutions.

“Teacher incentives have also been improved, while government has also pursued a complementary basic education programme to prepare out of school children for the mainstream into the formal sector.”

Prof Jane Opoku Agyeman opined that polytechnics have also been converted into universities while several educational policies have also been put in place to improve teaching and learning in various schools.

Touching on the student loans scheme, she said currently students who have their admission letters can apply for loans.
